What Nigeria's grid collapses teach businesses about backup power

If you operate in Nigeria, you do not need to be told the grid is fragile. You have lived through it. But the scale is worth stating plainly: the national regulator's own data recorded at least 222 partial and total grid collapses between 2010 and 2022, with a dozen more across 2024 and 2025.

How fast a collapse happens

In January 2026 the grid went down three times in under a month. During one collapse, generation crashed from 3,825 megawatts to 39 megawatts within minutes. In the December 2025 collapse, output fell from roughly 4,800 megawatts to 139 megawatts in about an hour, and all 22 power plants connected to the grid lost generation at the same time. This is the defining feature of a national grid collapse: it is not load-shedding where you lose one circuit. Everything connected goes dark at once, including the plant that was supposed to keep the grid itself stable.

Why it keeps happening

Nigeria has about 13,000 megawatts of installed generation capacity, yet the transmission network can barely wheel 5,000 megawatts before the system becomes unstable. The grid must hold its frequency within a narrow band — 49.5 to 50.5 hertz — and any sudden imbalance trips protective systems nationwide. Add gas pipeline vandalism that starves thermal plants of fuel, radial transmission lines in the north where a single fault cuts whole regions off, and control technology that has seen little meaningful upgrade since the late 1980s, and the pattern explains itself.

The lesson for your site

Waiting for the grid to be fixed is not a business plan. The fixes required — looped transmission redundancy, modern control systems, gas supply security — are national infrastructure projects measured in years and billions of dollars. Your exposure, meanwhile, is measured in lost cold stock, idle production lines and diesel invoices.
